Selhurst Early Years Centre

Funded by London Borough of Croydon Education Department, Selhurst Early Years Centre provides 46 places for both full and part time children aged 2-5 years.

Head of Centre: Linda Banfield

Head of Family Support: Jan Bond

Chair of Governors: Steve Haywood

Daily Routines - Our daily routine is a pattern for the children to become familiar with, helping them to feel secure. The start of the session is unhurried, so that staff have time to greet the children and speak with parents and carers.

The children are then able to become involved in a broad range of experiences. Towards the end of the morning and afternoon sessions, the children gather in small groups for ‘group time’ when the children can listen to stories, sing, talk and share ideas and reflect on many different experiences.

Session Times

Core day 9:30am - 3:30pm

Breakfast club 8:00am - 9:30am

Morning session 9:30am - 12:00pm

Lunchtime 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Afternoon session 1:00pm - 3:30pm

After School Club 3:30pm - 5:45pm

The Curriculum

At Selhurst Early Years Centre, we follow the foundation stage curriculum in the nursery class, within which there are six areas of learning as defined by the Government for all children under six.

These are: Personal, Social and Emotional Development * Communication, Language and Literacy * Mathematics * Knowledge and Understanding of the world * Physical Development * Creative and Aesthetic development *

In the 2-3’s class, the curriculum follows the government framework ‘Birth to Three Matters’. This focuses on the child across the following aspects: * A strong child * A skilful communicator * A competent learner * A healthy child *

Indoor Play

Our rooms are arranged into areas where resources for particular experiences are kept. Everything is clearly labeled and within easy reach for the children so that they can make choices and when they have finished learn how to clear away.

The following range of provision, thought to be important areas of early years experience, is available in each class base:

* Small world play * Construction * Drawing and writing area * Book corner * Listening area * Computers * A creative area for: painting and modelling * Natural materials - sand and water * Maths area * Science area * Home corner/role play area * Music *

Outdoor Play

Opportunities for outdoor play are of equal importance to indoor play and an integral part of the experiences for learning available during the session. The garden is used for a large part of the session and wet weather gear is available so that children can use the garden all year round. The following is available:

* Natural materials: sand, soil * Wheeled toys * Quiet areas for reading and drawing * Small construction * Large construction including large blocks, crates, tyres and guttering * Small world * Role play/ the play house * Exploration of the natural environment * Space for running and physical experiences * Climbing frames * Small equipment: balls, hoops, rings *

Staff - The staff are fully qualified and experienced teachers and nursery officers. There is also a team of teaching assistants and support staff who work with the children.

Meals - The resident cook and kitchen assistant at the Centre prepare varied and attractive meals, and cater for a range of dietary requirements. There are fresh fruit and vegetables daily.

Fees * Full day for fee paying place including lunch: £65.00 per week
