Learning about Maths
Tips for Encouraging Counting
Make activities relevant and fun.
If your child thinks he is helping you by counting the socks, or the screws
in a jar, he is learning that maths is important for everyday living.
 | When you lay the table - count the
plates, cups, knives, forks and spoons. |
 | Count when you walk up or down
steps. |
 | Count the coins when giving older
brothers or sisters their bus fare |
 | Count spoons of sugar into cups of
tea |
 | Count as you tidy away clean socks |
 | Count the items out of the bags
after a shopping trip |
As your child begins to understand
the 'two-ness of two' or the 'three-ness of three', encourage him to
estimate numbers.
