Tips for Encouraging Counting

Make activities relevant and fun. If your child thinks he is helping you by counting the socks, or the screws in a jar, he is learning that maths is important for everyday living.

	When you lay the table - count the plates, cups, knives, forks and spoons.
	Count when you walk up or down steps.
	Count the coins when giving older brothers or sisters their bus fare
	Count spoons of sugar into cups of tea
	Count as you tidy away clean socks
	Count the items out of the bags after a shopping trip

As your child begins to understand the 'two-ness of two' or the 'three-ness of three', encourage him to estimate numbers.
