Learning about Maths

Tips for Encouraging Counting

Make activities relevant and fun.  If your child thinks he is helping you by counting the socks, or the screws in a jar, he is learning that maths is important for everyday living.

bulletWhen you lay the table - count the plates, cups, knives, forks and spoons.
bulletCount when you walk up or down steps.
bulletCount the coins when giving older brothers or sisters their bus fare
bulletCount spoons of sugar into cups of tea
bulletCount as you tidy away clean socks
bulletCount the items out of the bags after a shopping trip

As your child begins to understand the 'two-ness of two' or the 'three-ness of three', encourage him to estimate numbers.
